ASTM E74 - FORCE TRANSFER STANDARDS

ASTM E74 Calibration standard

This standard which was developed in the USA serves the same purpose as ISO 376

It deals more generally with calibration methods.

Dynamometer categories

Two categories of load cells are differentiated:

• Class AA

  for secondary standard reference force dynamometers, i.e. used as a reference for the calibration of other dynamometers

• Class A

  for dynamometers used for the verification of testing machines.

  This differentiation introduces differences in the calibration procedure.

Calibration results

The results of the calibration serve to define the scope of application within the category to which the dynamometer belongs.

One essential difference with ISO 376 relies on the fact that the ASTM protocol is partly based on measurement uncertainty.
